Why the most radical fundamentalists (such as those in the Westboro Baptist Church) almost never lose their faith

“If I’m wrong and God doesn’t exist, then I’ve wasted all my life promoting the oppression of gays because of a lie. That would make me feel pretty bad. Therefore, God exists.”

  1. Leonard says:

And where did you get this quote from? Or are you just being anti-religious?

  2. It’s not a quote, it’s mine, though I think it’s right on the mark. As for being anti-religious, you must be new here. :)

    Right –
And I think in general it’s hard for someone to lose their faith if their faith is what they are. I mean Fred Phelps is a fundamentalist Christian guy. It’s what he does. It’s all he does, all day long. It’s not like he could lose his faith and keep the rest of life the same.

Whereas if your faith is just something you do on a Sunday, it’s a lot easier to stop.

This is perhaps why (if you believe the Gospels) Jesus spent so much time emphasizing that you couldn’t be a Christian if you didn’t give up everything else and follow him.
