Jenn: being European, I'd call Obama a conservative. Much like you'd probably call the right-wing Portuguese parties "quasi-socialists". In European terms, U.S. politicians run from conservative to almost-but-not-quite fascist (and I don't mean McCain there). I guess it all depends on our points of reference. :)

Anyway, I don't think McCain, as a person, is nearly as conservative / religious nut / incompetent as Bush. My fear is that the government will keep all the Republican thugs if he wins. And that's why I believe the "if my candidate loses, I'll vote Republican" Democrats are complete morons who shouldn't be seen as mature enough to vote. They see it all as being about the candidate, when the party (not to mention the issues) also matters -- perhaps even more.

Again, I have no love for Hillary; I don't like her as a person at all. But between her and McCain...

Clearly you don't know anything about McCain. He is not a Republican.. he's barely a moderate.

I'm an Obama supporter. If Hillary gets elected, I'm not voting. Then again, I'm not old enough to vote, so I couldn't even vote for Obama :)

Anyway, if you look at their viewpoints, they have almost entirely the same viewpoints.
