It might help if you were to speak with a couple of people that sought to understand this with an open heart and mind. Of course, you would need to approach their thoughts with an open heart and mind. Good luck.

Suffice it to say that man and society's relationship to God has changed over time.

Ross, I'm a bit tired today, but I'll try to find it tomorrow.

Meanwhile, you can probably find something here: http://www.skepticsannotatedbible.com/quran/cruelty/long.html .

Just a question, but can anyone point me to a verse in the Qu'ran that supports martyrdom to kill non believers?

I agree wholeheartedly. I often find myself trying to explain that concept to people in various conversations I have had. Especially during this time, people in America are so quick to point out all the violence and intolerance that is taking place (or has been taking place but is more public with technology and all) by those who practice Islam. "Christians are more tolerant!" and "You don't see Christians stoning people to death in the street *anymore*!" Well.... that is because Christians ignore more than half of their holy book and Muslims do not. All of the Abrahamic religions teach that everyone else is wrong. They don't make exceptions for the other two Abrahamic religions. They call them "heretics" and "heathens" and "infidels" and what does it say to do to those people in the various holy books? It's pretty explicit (although you can't argue that it's not contradictory in the same breath).

So basically what they are saying is that.... Christianity is better than Islam because Christians read the "good parts" Bible and not the whole thing. Okay. So Muslims are bad because they don't ignore 2/3rds of their inerrant word of god? Doesn't make sense. Try again. They are not being "extreme". They are being completely and utterly loyal and dedicated to what their religion says.. not ignoring most of what they don't like. It's all ridiculous anyway but that's not is being argued most of the time. ^_^
