FAQ: Why do you hate God?

Let me ask you a similar question: Why do you hate Thor?

You don’t, right? You’re pretty sure that Thor doesn’t exist, and it’s absurd to “hate” something that isn’t real.

Well, to an atheist, it’s exactly the same. Your god, to the best of our knowledge, exists as much as Thor. He’s as real as Thor is. In other words, he doesn’t exist at all. And we — much like you, I bet — certainly don’t “hate” beings we believe to be non-existent.

If you sometimes feel any anger from some of us, it’s probably directed at some particular Christians and their actions, because we think those actions are harming humanity in general. Not at “God”. The thing is, Christians are real. So are their actions. Nobody denies that. We’re convinced, however, that the Christian god — much like all the thousands of other gods invented by mankind throughout history — doesn’t exist. That he’s not real.

You don’t “hate” beings you know are fictional, such as Thor, Santa Claus, or the Tooth Fairy… and neither do we.

(Note: please keep any comments related to the above question / answer, and not to other subjects, such as whether God exists or not. Thanks.)

  1. Bryce says:

I hate unicorns. One ate tomatoes from my garden yesterday.

  2. Null says:

I’d hate god, assuming it’s the one in the bible that you’re talking about: that book says that it’s a completely f**ked up, sick and vicious bastard. Even if it did exist, I wouldn’t worship it.

  3. As Null said, I’d hate God if I thought he existed.

What I do hate is religion. It’s been far more a source of evil than good throughout history, and the world would be far better off without it.

  4. Noam Samuel says:

Then again, don’t you ever hate the villains or love the protagonist in a fictional book or movie?

    I think that’s a different kind of “hatred”. :)

  6. I will very much enjoy reading your FAQ’s. I think this approach will be very illuminating to me.

  7. OP says:

Read the book “Where is God when it hurts” and “Disappointment with God” by Philip yancey.Hope these help.

  8. Dane says:

If god’s love was perfect there would not be rebellion regardless of the freedom of choices that gad has givin us because “that perfect love” would satisfy and even Lucifer back then would have not rebelled and me now would not write this segment on god’s shortcomings.

  9. Abraham says:

Dane.. Gods love is perfect, So perfect that he’s crazy about you. He loves you madly that he gave up his own son to save your life.

  10. Matt says:

I only wrote ‘yes’ to see if it would post before I bothered writing a longer message.

I don’t hate God, but I’ve suffered an insane amount pretty much my whole life and I’ve had lots of hateful thoughts about God combined with
bad feelings which I can’t necesarily help.

I’ve been a christian whole life and feel like I’m worst off than most. I felt religion and spirituality had alot to do with my pain (combined with my anxious shitty mental disposition) so have often felt let down and bitter, feeling like religion f’ked me up, but God did nothing to help, feeling like would have been better if never thought about spiritual, religious things relating to God.

Obviously life isn’t fair, one might say as great as God is, he isn’t perfect? I mean who decided to make this earth-even God got mad with it and wiped it out with a flood (in the Bible).

I also feel frustrated with the thought of people going to hell, I mean God (and parents having sex) makes us (much of who we are is not what we choose), how can God condemn his own creation at it’s expense; mind, body, spirit and environment we’re raised in? And what about a bit more responsibility for looking after your creation, I mean what do they call a father who doesn’t look after his kids; dead beat dad? or someone who doesn’t look after their pets? Oh but God gave us free will(did I ask for it?), well my free will is to not have free will if that helps me have a life.

It’s says in bible that God so loved the world that he gave his only son, I’m not disagreeing, but I also think he had a obligation to save us from sin or ultimately hell (God can’t stand sin being so holy). Ok he can’t stand sin so the unsaved soul doesn’t get to go to heaven with him, but wouldn’t it be more loving to not make hell such a horrid place, unless your like an evil tormenting demon. I honestly don’t think Ive ever done anything to deserve eternal burning flames of hell, and if I was a horrible person (honestly how much control does a person have over the type of person they become? -being a product of genes and environment – a born psychotic or abused as a child?).

Maybe their should be like an in between house, where don’t live in heaven or hell, or maybe could just obliterate the unsaved soul so that cease to exist I know what I’d prefer if not going to heaven.

I’m not saying God isn’t good, but right now i feel somewhere along the line that God did the deed and we’re paying for it. But if you really want to hate someone hate Satan, according to the bible his messing things up was very deliberate and selfish unlike the loving God.

    Sigh…
So, what you’re saying is that God, even though he is omnipotent and perfect, had to incarnate as a human and sacrifice himself, just so he could persuade himself to forgive us from being his imperfect creations, and save us from the hell he created?

Funny, I’m not omnipotent, and can forgive other people without going through all that. Does it mean I’m better than God?

Really… it’s amazing how little (if at all) most Christians ever think about their own beliefs. The idea that God couldn’t “save” us without first sacrificing his son (who is also himself) doesn’t survive a minute of thinking… and, yet, millions believe in it unquestioningly.

By the way, all of this is offtopic. If you want to discuss something unrelated to a post, please use the forum.

  16. Renat says:

I have a tendency to want to lift my middle finger to the sky and say: F you you celestial F’er. I’m not an artiest but my theology has nothing to do with it. It seems natural. Anyone who had ever contemplated suicide questions who would care. I thought about my parents, grand parents, little sister.
Again, It’s not about theology. I hate myself. not that I’m not a good person. I’m weak, unattractive, unappealing, unrefined, I have no money, what do I have to offer?
So here I am in this situation. The good in me says that I can’t go without hurting the ones I love and I don’t want to stay. I didn’t chose to be born
definitely didn’t chose to be who I am.
I can blame my parents I suppose but it’s easier to blame God
ultimately, they didn’t have a choice either.
they were born into this world just like me.
who do I really hate? I don’t know but I need someone to hate and God seems to make a hell of a lot of sense.

  17. I would be much more interested in knowing why people who DO believe in a god would hate him / her, which is why I recently launched Why do you hate god?. However, I think some atheists might get a kick out of some of the entries. ;-)

  18. Anonymous says:

i hate god becasue every thing that has happend in my life is because of him, thats wat the bible states(my mom makes me go to church) and if everything that happens to me is because of god then he has ruined my F$%*@!& life and he can go to hell

  19. Windstorm says:

I hate God too. He is always angry and unforgiving.

I HATE THOR BECAUSE AUSTRALIA IS IN DROUGHT

  21. Antinatalist says:

There is a God , it’s called Life. Death is it’s counterpart, actually the one of the lesser evils, it doesn’t give good nor bad, but it gives you eternal peace. Life aka “God”, is the whore of chaos an order, driving you nuts and making you think your life means something when in the end you have suffered for nothing. “Illusions of the mind mr anderson!” LOL, whatever, if you gotta hate something, hate life and think twice before bringing another child into this sick twisted, “you can’t win” world.

  22. Stephen says:

Well for those Satanists who worship evil. They can all go to hell for hating God. But I feel real sorry for some of you who writed comments as it would seem you do not understand how this god can be good and all loving ect. I myself HATE God and think its about personal deep deep suffering or depression. So with some of you, you are not living a good life or had a bad expieriance in the past that affects your future and blame it all on god. Well, some are dump and think Satan is powerful enough to be the origen of every corner of the existance of evil. Unless dualism is true, I’d like to say I see no greatness in this God and will probably burn in flames for all eternity. Atleast I think I have a point in all of this and will continue this entill someone proves me wrong.

  23. Jonathan says:

I want to hate God because I am gay. I was born gay, knew it, didn’t ask for it. And no one gives a crap. There is no Christian that cares, there is no gay person that cares. And yet this, “omnipotent”, “omniscient” “God” is telling me – through people who can’t seem to get through college – that I am going to hell – a place of torment and pain.

Tell your “God” to be born gay in this world with his “word” and his “people”.

Tell Jesus to live with the people he created.

    Then get back to me.

Somehow, I think that what is true is true.

    STILL WAITING

  24. Stephen says:

I feel the directly scanned pain of Jonathan, I myself have that PURE HATRED for God for doing this to gay people even though I am not homosexual. The WORD of God wich is aperantly the BIBLE is so darn thick but doesnt even explain how gays endup gay. All the JUDGE has to say is tat they are not born like that, wich is abselute NONSENSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Biosexuals are born with a penis and vagina meaning they WHERE CRATED LIKE THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the middle ages these people would perish! The day I believe this sick thing is all-loving is the day I get amnesia. People who call you a Homo left and right dont understand directly what pain they are giing us, but God does, and all he sais is you will burn in a lake of fire for eternity because of you sexual emotions, but I shed my blood for other sins. I can go on talking my hatred out almost forever because of my personal pain and depresion. Just know that I am not a satanist, because Satan is probably part of the trinity since he helps God getting humanity to show their love for him by resisting him! What is your view Jonathan?

  25. Anonymous says:

maybe we can make a hate God club.

If the christian God is real, then I think he’s a failure and he lacks true love and commonsense. I think if God were a human he would be considered unbalanced. Why? well I could go on, but the idea of hell for eternity? If its as bad as they I certainly do not believe I deserve to go there or most people…Maybe Hitler would deserve a few thosands years, but forever??

  26. diane says:

I hate God because he knew what was going to happen when he created this world. He went right ahead with it anyway. I can handel anything happening to adults since I have no idea what all they have done in their lifetime. But children and animals are innocent. No question about that. I guarentee if God were suffering even a second of pain he allows to those innocents it would stop right away. Nothing and I mean nothing excuses that. I don’t care about his plan or anyother stupid nonsense christians throw at you. All of that is words. I would rather believe there is no God but sadly there probably is. And his willingness to allow torture of children and animals should scare all of us.
